Flat or Matte Paint Sheen
Matte finish can range in price from $18 to $45 per gallon. This sheen provides great coverage, hides wall imperfections, doesn’t reflect light and is ideal for ceilings and high traffic rooms. The downside of matte sheen is that is vulnerable to damage and depending on the brand can be difficult to clean. Matte is often used in the master and other bedrooms of the house.
Eggshell Paint Sheen
Eggshell finish can range in price from $17 to $50 per gallon. This sheen is effectively matte with a little bit of luster. Eggshell is easier to clean and hides imperfections well. While it is more durable than matte finish, it is still slightly susceptible to damage. The ideal application for an eggshell finish is the dining room.
Satin Paint Sheen
Satin finish can range in price from $17 to $55 per gallon. It is easy to clean, resilient and great for higher traffic rooms. The downside of using satin sheen is that brush strokes can be easily seen if not done properly. Satin is perfect for painting a family room, living room and hallway areas.
Semi-gloss Paint Sheen
Semi-gloss finish can range in price from $30 to $60 per gallon. This sheen is similar to satin in that it is easy to clean, durable and should be used in areas like kitchens and bathrooms which have the possibility for grease stains and moisture. Semi-gloss can also be used on trim that is expected to get a lot of traffic in the home.
High-gloss Paint Sheen
High-gloss finish can range in price from $30 to $65 per gallon. It has an almost shiny like appearance, is extremely durable and easy to clean. High-gloss is typically used for molding, doors and trim. The downside to using high-gloss sheen is that it will highlight any imperfections on your walls.
